Hawkins Squadron Meeting, July 8: NEW LOCATION

Friend and Colleagues:

Please make plans to join us on Thursday evening, July 8, at Texas A&M University at Galveston for our next Hawkins Squadron meeting. Dinner will begin at 1800, with the meeting and program at 1900. The meeting will be held in the Executive Dining Room in the Northen Student Center (Building 3004), adjacent to the Captain’s Landing Dining Hall. Arrive early, because serving ends at 1830. A range of menu items will be available of a single price of $9 plus tax. Menus will be available next week and passed along.

This marks a change from previous meetings, held in local restaurants. In planning our July meeting, though, we’ve run into a number of difficulties scheduling a meeting under the previous terms. The local restaurant business is booming – and heaven knows, they need it after the struggles of the last year – and hosting a dinner meeting in the format we used before is not really a priority for them. Holding a meeting at TAMUG next week may also work well to help expand our ongoing relationship with the university and its administration.

Thursday’s program will be “Marines of the Texian Republic,” highlighting the organization, engagements, and notable individuals who served in that lesser-known part of the Texas Navy.

We will also have a drawing for an 1836 Texas Navy Ensign and an autographed copy of “Forsaken Patriot: The Strange Life and Times of Samuel May Williams,” generously donated by one of the authors, Admiral Gordon Blocker.

Full details on Thursday’s agenda, menu, directions, and parking information will follow soon. We hope to see you there!
